Creative Writing Competition

 The Cultural Section of the Islamic Centre of England is pleased to announce the first round of the Creative Writing Competition in year 2008.

This Section is delighted and proud to play a role in the development and recognition of fresh and original ideas and talent and in doing so advances its endeavour of discovering the wordsmiths of this century.

The Cultural Section would like to invite writers to submit a short story or play that is fresh and original and address one of the following themes:

      1-      The means of unity

2-      How can a man live a life based on faith in a material world?

3-      How can we live in peace in a society based with violence?

4-      The greatest calamity is being hopeless.

5-      The consequence of jealousy.

6-      Search for the truth.

7-      The greatest prize is forgiveness.

8-      How can a man of conscience live in a world without a conscience?

9-      How can we hold our culture together in a world called the global village?

10-  The role of Satan on hindering the man in making donation.

11-  Donating in secret for God?s satisfaction.

12-  The victory of believers.

Note: Please feel free to choose any one or a number of the above themes(s). Kindly avoid scenes of sex and gratuitous violence.

 The competition?s panel of judges comprises experienced writers who will appraise each manuscript on its merits. Six works will be short-listed on the basis of their quality and adherence to the theme(s) of these short-listed works, the play or short story exhibiting the highest quality writing will be awarded a minimum prize of ?400 to a maximum of ?700.

The panel has the option of selecting more than one work, if the works are similar in standard and quality. In the event that this occurs, the submission will be awarded as follows: 

FIRST PRIZE:  ? 400     SECOND PRIZE: ?200  THIRD PRIZE: ?100

Moreover, in order to encourage and support * authors the cultural section will publish six of the best short-listed works. 

For those works not short listed, professional comments and advice are available, subject to a fee.

As the work of the panel involves the reading and evaluation of all the entries, the appraisal process is expected to take up to two month. We therefore, hope to notify applicants of the results of the competition by 31/October/ 2008.

Submissions received either by hand or postmarked after

31 of August 2008 will not be considered

 * The Cultural Section is also running a scheme to support and help those writers who are keen to stage their play or make a short film of their story. All projects submitted to this scheme will be assessed once a year outside of the Creative Writing Competition.
