AS Course Report

The course was held at the Seyyeda Zainab (A.S) Building, Birmingham. Most people came on the coach from Stanmore. The course started off with namaaz and lunch. After a short introduction, we were sent straight to class.

We were to have 9 hours worth of lessons a day, starting at 9 am and finishing at 10pm. It really was an intensive course. When I first saw the timetable, I was dreading it. However, it wasn???√?√?t bad at all. The lessons went by very quickly. In fact, at the end of the course, most people felt it should have been longer so that more topics could have been covered.
The subjects covered in this course were biology, chemistry and maths. For all three subjects we had excellent teachers.

Our 3 teachers, Arif uncle, Mahmood uncle and Amir uncle

We were split into 3 classes. There were 2 mixed classes and one girls only class. In our introduction, we were told that the best form of revision is to do practice papers. So, our 2, 1 ??? hour sessions of biology consisted of past paper questions with very interesting and entertaining stories in between by Arif uncle. Ooops, I don???√?√?t think he likes being called uncle, sorry. In our maths lessons we were doing past papers and questions on subjects we found difficult. Mahmood uncle helped us with any problems we had when he came back from his strolls every now and again!

Chemistry in action

The teaching style in chemistry was different. We played a game at the beginning to wake us up a little, followed by revision of that topic. We then did questions from past papers.

Each morning we had breakfast in the ???√?√≤rainforest caf??????√?√?! Between each lesson we had a half hour break. In some of these breaks we were given kebabs, samosas and mogo! Wow! We ate lunch and dinner inside the main building. On the last day, they ordered pizza for us!

Each night, we had the opportunity to play sports

On the second and third nights we also had quizzes. In the first quiz, we were given pages worth of riddles and lateral thinking puzzles to solve, each one was worth one mark. There was also a bonus puzzle worth 15 marks. The boys actually gained more marks from the 1 mark riddles, however, as we got full marks on the bonus question, we won that quiz and were in the lead at the start of the next days quiz. The second quiz was a version of a Canadian tv show game, made by one of our mentors. It was a very interesting and competitive game especially as we were playing head to head. Each team took it in turns to answer a question on a topic of their choice, and also a money value of their choice, e.g Islamic history ????300. If the team gave the right answer, they would gain that amount of points, and if they got it wrong they would lose that amount. Unfortunately, the girl???√?√?s team lost quite badly. Even though we lost, we enjoyed the quizzes very much. Also, according to our team, Yasmin Khan is the first female president of Pakistan, even though she may not even exist!

Both teams discussing the answers, desperate to win

After our second lesson on Tuesday we had a group picture taken. It took a while to get everyone together properly and in perfect positions. A little to the right, no back to the left, and forward a bit, yep that???√?√?s it, perfect.

Say CHEESE

During the course we had excellent mentors. They did so much for us. Any food we wanted, they would go and buy it for us. Most of us had expected that we would be provided with paper so did not bring any. However, we were supposed to bring our own. So the mentors went out and bought us paper and folders. Our mentors, for the girls, Zohra, Farhana and Nayla, were the best. They helped us so much. They even made us desert one night. Also, they were very patient when we just would not wake up in the morning and so much more!

There was no escape from the camera, even at mealtimes

Even on the last day, we were working hard. After having our last lunch together, there was a small presentation. We were all given a group photo, an Asma-ul-Husna keychain and a daily dua book. The guys also received ????10 each as they won the quiz. After our last lesson we had to pack up and clear our rooms. One of the hardest tasks, was to pack up our sleeping bags!

We were all quite sad to leave. As well as working hard we had enjoyed ourselves very much and look forward to attending more courses in the future.
